Matty is a world-renowned street artist, highly accomplished and experienced, with his passion for creating art beginning when he was only a child. Throughout the years he has experimented and honed his artistic talent to create a unique style of merging both airbrush and aerosol methods to form his signature pieces that we see today.
About the Artist
Matty Te Paea, known widely as MattyBro, is a world-renowned street artist, large-scale muralist and airbrush specialist based in Queensland, Australia. Of Maori heritage, Matty grew up in Hastings, New Zealand, in a neighbourhood that was vibrant and rough around the edges. It was there that the seeds of his artistic life were quietly planted, through a love of video games, comics and the bold visual language of 80s and 90s street culture. In his 20s, Matty picked up an airbrush and began creating custom work on tees, caps and merchandise. By 2001, that passion had grown into a business. His profile rose steadily throughout those years. Matty painted for some of the biggest names in music and sport, including Snoop Dogg, DMX, Xzibit, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Boyz II Men, Kurupt, Kci & JoJo, The Rock (Dwayne Johnson), Anthony Mundine and Scribe, among others. It was a period that sharpened both his craft and his connections, and laid the groundwork for everything that followed. With his full attention now on large-scale mural work, MattyBro has painted walls across Australia and internationally, working for gyms, restaurants, shopping centres, private residences and high-profile clients. Notable commissions include a large-scale mural of Arnold Schwarzenegger for World Gym Sydney, a major project for Buttabean Motivation founder Dave Letele, and works for Culture Kings, Jason Momoa, Xzibit and Snoop Dogg, among many others. What sets Matty apart is his signature technique: the seamless fusion of aerosol spray paint and airbrush. On large walls he uses cans for coverage and scale, then layers in airbrush for fine detail, blending the two so precisely that it is nearly impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins. The result is a body of work that can scale from a 40-metre street wall down to a motorbike tank or a pair of custom kicks, with the same level of technical control and visual impact at every size. His inspirations are deliberately broad, spanning culture, history, film, sport, mythology and the communities he works in. He is driven by a deep belief in authenticity and has no patience for imitation, something he speaks about candidly when mentoring emerging artists. Matty's work consistently balances spectacle with meaning, producing pieces that stop people in their tracks but also have something to say about the spaces they inhabit and the people they represent. Today, Matty travels internationally for commissions and continues to take on projects of all scales, from intimate private pieces to landmark public murals. He is represented by his own studio, MattyBro Art, and remains one of the most technically accomplished and culturally connected street artists operating in the Asia-Pacific region.
