A little Hollywood in the heart of Burleigh, this 12-metre mural by MattyBro captures Austin Butler as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s Gold Coast-filmed *Elvis*.
Created in 2022, the artwork grew from a conversation about revitalising the local arts scene after the pandemic. For Matty, it was a way to honour the city’s creative community and thank Luhrmann for bringing the production to the Gold Coast, creating local jobs and drawing international attention to the region.
The race to finish was almost a film scene itself. Matty worked 12 to 15-hour days, even painting through rain beneath a makeshift tarp, to complete the mural in time for the Australian premiere.
Located at 1863 Gold Coast Highway, the work brings a piece of the city’s filmmaking history into its everyday streets, celebrating the connection between public art, cinema and the people who make them.
