No one really knows who painted the figure of iconic Gold Coast surfing legend, Michael Peterson. It did however mysteriously appear on the wall of the Burleigh Pavilion on the weekend of the 30th Anniversary of The Stubbies Pro – a surf competition held at Burleigh Heads from 1977 to 1988. The included photo is of the iconic “MP” who after giving it his all in what would be a comp-winning performance at The 1977 Stubbies, took a rest on the wall – where the mural sits. The “MH” and “AB” beside Michael are not the initials of the artist and not the initials of Michael Peterson. Earlier photographs of the mural show the letters were not there originally but no one is quite sure when they appeared.
